Eldred Geffcken (1843-ca. 1925) arrived in Savannah, Georgia, in 1850. When the Civil War erupted, he enlisted in the Phoenix Riflemen under Captain G.A. Gordon. Geffcken eventually served under General W.H.T. Walker in the campaigns of Northern Georgia and Tennessee; under General Hood around Nashville; under General N.B. Forrest around Murfreesboro; and joined General Joseph E. Johnston for the battle of Smithfield, North Carolina, and was with the last Confederate forces which surrendered on April 26, 1865, near Greensboro, North Carolina. After the war, Geffcken returned to Savannah and worked for the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, a job which he held for 46 years until his retirement.
This collection consists of photocopies of two letters. The first letter, written by W.G. Reed to Mabel Geffcken, 1910, includes an account of Lt. Eldred Geffcken (her father) at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain; Reed also references Joseph Derry's history regarding the Civil War and includes a sketch of Geffcken's service record in the Confederate army. In the second letter, George F. Lamback introduces himself to Eldred Geffcken as a former member of Geffcken's Company B and mentioned the reorganization of the troops into the First Regiment.
Material was acquired from daughter of creator.
