Biographical/Historical Note

Mordecai Sheftall (1803-1881) was born in Barnwell, South Carolina. When he was very young his family moved back to Savannah where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a Captain of the City Watch (police) and afterwards was Inspector of the Custom House for many years.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of one letter from Mordecai Sheftall to his grandson, William H. Cuyler Sheftall, regarding family background and moral advice. Photocopy of original in possession of the family in Macon.
