Biographical/Historical Note

Solomon's Lodge, A. and F.M., founded in 1735, is the oldest Masonic lodge in Georgia, and the second oldest in the United States. The first Masonic lodge in Savannah was organized there in 1734 by a group of Scots who had just arrived in the new colony of Georgia. The first presiding officer, called the Warden in the Scottish system (then current), was Dr. Patrick Tailfer. The following year the lodge, designated only as the lodge in "Savannah in ye Province of Georgia" received its charter from the grand Lodge of England.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of photocopies of the Rules or By-Laws of Solomon's Lodge, undated and signed by members of the Lodge, and a letter form William young in Savannah to "Worshipful Brother," dated June 11, 1771 (the date on the letter was incorrectly recorded as "5771"). In the letter, Young requests that Noble Jones be appointed Grand master in Georgia. William Young was Worshipful Master of Solomon's Lodge.

The collection also includes 16 rolls of microfilm. Included are minutes, 1756-1956; an Act of Congress and miscellaneous correspondence relating to the return of the minute book from the Library of Congress to Savannah in 1926; a historical sketch of Freemasonry in Georgia, 1733-1800; a sketch of the first mason initiated in Georgia; the history of the Grand Lodge of Georgia; the minutes of the Finance Committee, 1800-1806; and papers from the Solomon's Lodge Bicentennial Celebration, 1734-1934.

The materials were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Salt Lake City, Utah and the Department of Archives and History, Georgia, in 1959.
