Lafayette McLaws (1821-1897) was born in Augusta, Georgia. He attended the University of Virginia in 1837, but before he completed his first year he was appointed a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. McLaws served in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War, and in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war he returned to Georgia and entered the insurance business. He served as postmaster of Savannah, Georgia, from 1876-1884. McLaws died in Savannah and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
This is a statement of citizens of Savannah endorsing General Lafayette McLaws' performance of duties as postmaster of Savannah. David Yuley Dancy's is the only signature on the document. It is possible that other copies were circulated.
