Biographical/Historical Note

William Thorne Williams (ca. 1785-1868) was born in Philadelphia. He became a prominent and highly respected citizen of Savannah. He became a member of the Chatham Artillery in 1813 and was a member almost continuously until his death. He was an alderman of Savannah, 1825--1828, 1832--1833 and mayor for six terms, 1828-1844. He was a printer, bookbinder and proprietor of a book store. See the account of his funeral in Savannah Morning News, Oct. 12, 1868, p.3, col.3.


Scope and Content Note

All of the papers in this collection relate to the job as State Printer for the Georgia Senate and House Journals, the Laws and the indices to them. There are the agreement between W.T. Williams and Joseph Walker of Walker, Williman & Co. of Charleston for supplies and some printing; the performance agreement between W.T. Williams and S.T. Chapman, State Printer from Nov. 1853 to his death in Sept. 1854; correspondence between Joseph Walker and W.T. Williams regarding payments for supplies and work; and some undated papers listing costs for the State printing, 1853-1854.
