George Washington (1732-1799), first president of the United States, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was a planter, and served in the Colonial Virginia Militia. He was in command of American forces during the American Revolution.
This collection includes two facsimiles of letter written by George Washington (1732-1799). The first letter is dated January 9, 1777, Morristown [New Jersey], addressed to George Bayler, regarding Bayler's appointment as commander of a regiment and selection of officers to serve with him. The second letter is addressed to Mathew Carey (1760-1839), dated March 15, 1785, Mount Vernon, regarding Carey's new newspaper.
