The War Camp Community Service Club of Savannah was established in February, 1918, for the purpose of entertainment and beneficial services for servicemen stationed in Savannah or who came to Savannah. In September, 1918, they procured the Georgia Hussars Club on the southwest corner of Bull and Liberty Streets in which to carry on and expand their service. In the home, they maintained a cafeteria, a tea room, a library, a game room, a ballroom, and rooming facilities. It was supported by local subscription. Donations of food, furniture, and furnishings were received. The Club sponsored dances, concerts, lectures, dramatic skits, garden parties, dancing lessons, community sings, visits to hospitals and military bases, etc. The War Camp Community Service ceased operations at the end of World War I, and the Community Service Club of Savannah was organized to carry on its work. This, too, ceased operations in 1920.
This collection consists of a minute book, a diary kept by the Superintendent and house mother, an account book, a visitors' register, appreciation books, historical sketches, committee reports, correspondence, and photographs from the War Camp Community Service Club.
Material was acquired from the Community Service Club, Inc., which continued the work of the creating body.
