Biographical/Historical Note

Daniel Sturges (1765-1823) was born in 1765 in Norborne Parish, Virginia, to Reverend Daniel and Eleanor Sturges. In approximately 1789, the family moved from Virginia to South Carolina; the next year they moved again, this time to Georgia. Sturges was elected the Surveyor-General of Georgia on January 26, 1797, a position he held for 58 years. He married Elizabeth Lewis three years after his election to the post.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a letter from Daniel Sturges to Gov. John Milledge, 1803. The letter presents the map prepared as required by a resolution of the Legislature, as well as a census of the Indian Cession (neither document is included). In the letter, Sturges states that he preparing a plan of the Indian Cession.
