Biographical/Historical Note

James Screven (1750-1778) was a member of the Provincial Congress of Georgia and of the Georgia Council of Safety. He was a Brigadier-General of the Georgia militia and was killed at the battle of Midway, Nov. 22, 1778.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains two items: a letter from James Screven to Archibald Bulloch reporting on the military situation in Georgia, and a "Decree of the State of Georgia, in favour of the Miss Scrivin's for 1000 acres Land each", an extract from the Minutes of the Governor and Executive Council regarding land given to James Screven's daughters for his service in the Revolutionary War.
