The Savannah-Chatham County World War II Memorial Association, Inc. was chartered in March 1947 for the purpose of the erection and maintenance of a suitable memorial to the men and women of Chatham County who gave their lives in World War II. Shortly after its organizational meeting on March 20, 1947, a Review and Planning Committee was appointed to select the memorial; Lowry Axley was elected as chairman of the Committee. The Committee distributed forms to civic and patriotic organizations and individuals for suggestions for the memorial. A memorial hospital was the first choice among the suggestions. A City and County Hospital Authority was then appointed by the Mayor and County Commission to study the feasibility and financing of a general hospital. These efforts resulted in the erection of Memorial Medical Center, which opened on October 21, 1955.
This collection consists of papers collected by Lowry Axley as Chairman of the Review and Planning Committee of the Savannah-Chatham County World War Memorial Association, Inc. Included are the minutes of the committee, 1947-1948, the committee's by-laws, names of the committee members, correspondence, 1947-1951, letters addressed to the mayor of Savannah and to the Association containing memorial suggestions, 1945-1948, clippings, radio talks, pamphlets, and sketches of memorials. Also included is a Savannah Hospital Survey, 1948.
Lowry Axley was Chairman of the creating body.
