Emma Caruthers Preston was the daughter of Dr. William Alexander Caruthers of Lexington, Virginia and Savannah, Georgia, and Louisa Catherine Gibson Caruthers of Savannah. In 1851, she married William Frederick Preston (1823-1884), the son of the Rev. Williard Preston (born in Massachusetts), minister at Independent Presbyterian Church. William F. Preston was born in Vermont, but lived most of his life in Savannah, where he was a cotton broker. After her husband's death in 1884, Emma Preston moved from Savannah to Memphis, Tennessee.
A sister of Dr. William Alexander Caruthers, Sarah Lyle Caruthers, married John Thomas Lewis Preston of Virginia; her sister-in-law was Mrs. William Armistead Cocke, who lived at Oakland plantation in Cumberland County, Virginia.
This collection consists of letters written to Emma Caruthers Preston, 1862-1879. Most of the letters are from her aunt, E.R. Cocke and William Frederick Preston. Some of the letters include receipts and financial statements; one letter includes financial statements concerning the employment of Emma Preston as the housekeeper at the Bishopthorpe School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
