Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph William Pinder (1782-1865) was the U.S. Military Storekeeper, Issuing Commissary, and Assistant Commissary at Savannah, Georgia, during the War of 1812.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of papers concerning military supplies issued to the troops in Georgia during the War of 1812 by J.W. Pinder, Military Storekeeper. Some were issued by Major Thomas Bourke, Deputy Quartermaster General. The supplies were for Fort Jackson, U.S. Army Hospital at Savannah Barracks, Fort Hawkins, the governor of Georgia, and for detachments in various other places. Most were for the 8th Regiment, U.S. Infantry.

The collection includes requisitions; vouchers; returns of clothing, arms, military supplies, food, stationery, and other supplies; letters with orders, regulations, instructions, and some re Pinder's compensation; Pinder's appointment as assistant commissary. Also included are returns of ordnance and military stores issued in Savannah, October-December 1813; returns of ordnance and ordnance stores at Savannah, December 31, 1813; returns of clothing lost in action at Point Peter, January 13, 1815; invoice of military stores from U.S. Arsenal on Schuylkill sent to Savannah, July 22, 1816; printed broadside "New rules for recruiting the Army," February 10, 1814, signed by W.G. Walback, Adj. Gen.; letter of marque for armed schooner, Midas, owned by James Wilson, John Gooding, John W. Stump, and Alexander Thompson, to seize any British vessel in jurisdictional limits of U.S., June 7, 1814, signed by James Madison, President, and James Monroe, Secty. Of State; also a blank commission not filled in or dated, but signed as above.
