Biographical/Historical Note

Louis Knorr (1825-1903) was a physician who came to Savannah from Munich, Germany, with his wife, Juliana Anna (Bischoff) Knorr in 1850. In addition to his medical practice, he was the librarian of the Georgia Historical Society, 1851-1853, editor of the Georgia Statts Zeitung, professor of Chemistry at the Oglethorpe medical College, 1861-1862 and at Savannah Medical College, 1871. William C. Boischoff, father of Mrs. Knorr, was a well-known landscape gardener and was Royal Court Gardener at the Nymphenburg Palace. He came to Savannah to visit his daughter in the 1850s and while he submitted a plan for the design of Forsyth Park. He returned to Savannah in 1857 and lived here until 1861, when he returned to Bavaria.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains genealogical materials on the family of Louis Knorr. Included are a photocopy of the marriage certificate (in German) for Juliana Bischoff and Louis Knorr, 1850; a photocopy of the marriage license for Anna Knorr and Simon Jones, 1872; Louis Knorr's obituary, 1903; a photocopy of the genealogy of the Knorr family (in German), Die Familie Knorr von Dacha bei Munchen und Alle ihre Nachtommon vom Jabre 1783 bis 1883; and other genealogical notes and materials.
