Peter Hynes was born in Great Britain and naturalized as an American citizen in Chatham County, Georgia in 1811. He became a merchant in Savannah. He died in Savannah and was buried in Colonial Park cemetery; he was later reinterred in the Sullivan lot in Lauren Grove Cemetery. James Sullivan married either a daughter or granddaughter of Peter Hynes in 1847. He was a merchant, selling stoves and hardware.
This collection consists of the papers of Peter Hynes and James Sullivan. Included are Hynes' naturalization certificate, two bills of sale for slaves, Sullivan's Daily Memorandum book from 1855, which contains information about daily life in Savannah, Sullivan's commission as Colonel in the Georgia Militia, and James Sullivan's list of membership in various military organizations, 1843-1856.
Material acquired from Robert F. Sullivan, Jr., from the estate of his father, Robert F. Sullivan (1888-1959), who was probably the great-grandson of James Sullivan.
