Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was born on July 16 in Windham, Connecticut. After private study, Huntington received permission to practice law in Connecticut in 1754. He moved to Norwich in 1760. He was elected as a Representative from Norwich to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1764. A delegate to the Continental Congress, in 1776 Huntington signed the Declaration of Independence. He served in the Continental Congress until 1874, during which time he served as its President from 1779 to 1781. The Congress ratified the Articles of the Confederation during Huntington's presidency. He was elected Governor of Connecticut in 1786, a position he held until his death in 1796.
The collection consists of a petition to Huntington from unnamed Georgia prisoners of war, stating their case and experiences, and asking to be exchanged. Dated December 16, 1779, St. Johns, Antigua.
