Biographical/Historical Note

Harriet Brailsford Hardee was born in Savannah, the daughter of Charles Seaton Henry Hardee. She graduated from Columbus Free Kindergarten Training School, Georgia, in 1899, and was for a short time after that with a kindergarten at the Kincaid Mills in Griffin, Georgia. She returned to Savannah in 1900 and took charge of one of the kindergartens operated by the Kate Baldwin Free Kindergarten. She also operated a private kindergarten in the afternoons. In 1910, with Edith L. West, she organized the Savannah Kindergarten which was housed in the Pape School. She retired in 1927.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of Harriet Brailsford Hardee's materials used in training for kindergarten work. There are two notebooks with names of exercises and examples of children's work, and work-sheets tied together accordion fashion of examples of stitching and paper work, free cutting, folding and weaving. There is also a folder of loose papers with information pertaining to Miss Hardee's work and photographs of groups, May festivals, and a banquet of Savannah Kindergarten and Pape School kindergarten.
