Biographical/Historical Note

John Grimes (1781-1861) came to Savannah, Georgia, in 1804 and began his medical practice. In the same year, Grimes was one of the founders of the Georgia Medical Society. In 1806, Grimes married Catherine Glen, the granddaughter of Noble Wimberly Jones. Grimes served as a representative of Chatham County in the General Assembly in 1809.

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes four items of Dr. John Grimes. In his account book, Dr. Grimes recorded visits, treatments, medicines, and fees of his patients' care between May 18, 1804 and August 14, 1807. The day book, November l, 1805 through September 27, 1807, records patient visits and prescriptions. The collection also includes an 18 page account of the life of Noble Wimberly Jones, recorded by George Jones for John Grimes, June 2, 1805, and a 44 page eulogy of Noble Wimberly Jones, delivered by John Grimes before the Georgia Medical Society on the occasion of his death.
