Biographical/Historical Note

The cornerstone of the Nathanael Greene Monument was laid in 1825 by the Marquis de La Fayette in a Masonic ceremony in Johnson Square, Savannah, Georgia. In 1826, a request for monument designs was announced and the chosen design was built by a company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1830, the monument was delivered to Savannah and in 1883, a bronze inscription plate and a portrait plate were ordered from the Henry Bonnard Bronze Company. In 1886, the commemorative tablets were placed on the monument by a committee from the Georgia Historical Society working with a committee from the Savannah City Council.

Scope and Content Note

This collection reflects the efforts of the Greene Monument Committee in 1886 to place commemorative tablets on the Greene Monument in Johnson Square, Savannah, Georgia. The collection includes a history of the monument, newspaper clippings regarding the monument, and correspondence and receipts regarding the order and delivery of the commemorative tablets.
