The Georgia State Troops were one of many local military divisions created by Governor Joseph Brown to defend the state during the Civil War. While the Georgia Militia, consisting of almost every male aged 16 and older residing in the Militia Districts, was still active during this time, many of its members had joined Confederate regiments at the start of the war. Therefore, Governor Brown determined a need for these additional troops. Established in 1861, the Georgia State Troops consisted of three brigades. At its largest, the division consisted of approximately 8,000 troops. The 1st Conscription Act of April, 1862, led to most of the Georgia State Troops soldiers enlisting in the Confederate Army. The Georgia State Troops, along with the other local groups created by Governor Brown, soon became defunct.
The 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade of the Georgia State troops was commanded by Colonel Cyrus B. Harkie. Col. Harkie began as Captain of Company H, but was transferred to Company S in October of 1861.
This collection contains a volume of the morning reports of the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade of the Georgia State Troops, 1861-1862. Most of the reports are signed by C.B. Harkie, commanding colonel. The name Charles A.L. Lamar is written inside the front cover.
