The Georgia Governor and Council was established as the governing body of Georgia by the king in 1754. Previously, George was governed by Trustees. In this new form of government, the king chooses the governor of Georgia.
The collection consists of two volumes of the proceedings and minutes of the Governor and Council and 62 loose papers. The proceedings supplement The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, ed. A.D. Candler, v. XII (Atlanta, 1907), which contains the "Proceedings and Minutes of the Governor and Council from August 6, 1771, to February 13, 1782." Only fifteen of the sessions in this published volume are repeated in the volumes of this collection. The loose papers are some of the supporting papers of the Council sessions and include a few minutes.
William Coffee Daniell was the executor of Joseph Vallence Bevan's estate. The volumes were originally part of the Joseph Vallence Bevan collection, MS 71. The loose papers were originally part of the Wayne-Stites-Anderson papers, given by the Anderson family.
