Lewis Stanley de Vegter lived in Savannah, Georgia


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of materials collected by Lewis Stanley de Vegter. Included are an indenture for the sale of land in Yamacraw by Joseph and Ann Gibbons to William Gibbons, dated Chatham County, February 28, 1791; an appraisal by Joseph Habersham of a lot within the contemplated site of Fort Wayne; and a receipted bill for rice from R. Habersham and Sons, Merchants and Factors. Joseph Habersham (1751-1815) was a lifelong resident of Savannah, Georgia. He married Isabella Rae in 1776 and had five sons and five daughters. He was a leader of the "Sons of Liberty" in Savannah in 1774. During the Revolutionary War, Habersham rose to the rank of colonel in the Georgia Line of the Continental Army. After the war, he assisted in Georgia's ratification of the Constitution. In 1795, he was appointed Postmaster General of the United States by President George Washington. Habersham was also a prominent merchant and planter. Robert Habersham (1786-1870) was one of Joseph Habersham's sons and the proprietor of R. Habersham and Sons, located at 146 Bay Street in Savannah.
