John Berrien (1759-1815), the father of John McPherson Berrien, was from New Jersey. John Berrien was Aide-de-Camp to General Lachlan McIntosh in 1777. He served with General McIntosh at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and was in several other engagements during the American Revolution, attaining the rank of major. After the Revolution he served as captain of a volunteer cavalry company. In 1813 he was Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County, Georgia. He died in Savannah, Georgia on November 6, 1815 and was buried in Colonial Cemetery.
This collection consists of a certificate of John Berrien's service in the American Revolution and his commission as Inspector for the Revenue for the Port of Savannah. It is dated November 22, 1786 and is signed by Lachlan McIntosh. The commission is dated March 6, 1792 and is signed by President George Washington and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson.
The commission was treated with Japanese paper, date unknown.
